Meet the Farrier
George has been trimming and shoeing horses since his early teenage years, when he started apprenticing with a farrier near his hometown. He continues his education today through seminars and clinics, keeping up to date on the latest innovations in the farrier world. Also, each spring semester George assists in teaching the farrier course at UWRF.
When trimming and shoeing, George takes into consideration the conformation of the horse and the hoof, and trims each horse to maximize range of movement, breakover and soundness. He creates a balanced hoof with an optimal breakover point that will allow the horse to build a good callus. He has had success trimming and shoeing tough-luck rescue cases with overgrown, cracked, bruised or misshapen hooves, bringing them back to having healthier hoof horn, correct angles, a balanced foot and soundness in their gaits.
George has experience trimming and shoeing dressage and jumping horses, barrel racers, pleasure horses, trail horses, and 4-H mounts. He works with a wide range of shoe types, pads, polyurethane hoof fill products, experimental founder shoes, and more to create the optimal situation for each horse.
