Draft Power

Jazz and Daisy

Daisy and Jazz are the most recent addition to Walker Farms. George and I have plans to use them for farming the 40-some acres we have rented for the year 2010. The 'Big Girls', as they are affectionately called, will help plow the fields, and then seed, harvest and move hay. George and I have already used the team to feel round bales to the saddle horses, and Daisy and Jazz have proven to be well-trained and willing partners.

Purchasing and using a team of horses, as opposed to a tractor, is part of our dream of creating a diversified and sustainable farm system. The team will be able to do their part of the work on the farm while fitting into the cycle of rotational grazing and manure management. Compared to a tractor, the girls produce far less gas and diesel smoke, are much more fun and interactive to work with, and infinitely more grateful for a good brushing and a treat after a job well done.
